In November, the Macy’s Union Square Tree Lighting Ceremony sparkles with 33,000 LED lights and 1,100 shining ornaments on the city’s most iconic Christmas tree. Approximately 1,300 mirrored steel rods hang from the ceiling to support the LED matrix and produce an ephemeral optical effect. Point Cloud is composed of more than 50,000 color LEDs arranged in a three-dimensional display that glimmers over the heads of walkers on the bridge. Head to the East bridge of the newly renovated Moscone Center, where you’ll find Point Cloud, a public art piece designed by Leo Villareal, who also designed the iconic Bay Lights on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The screen displays text from dozens of writers including Joan Didion, Maya Angelou and Harvey Milk, with each piece lasting anywhere from 45 seconds to two hours. San Francisco-based electronic-media artist Jim Campbell creates work that combines film, light-emitting-diodes (LEDs) and sculptural elements.
